The Canyon's Edge:
Science, Story and Soul on the Colorado Plateau

Designed for middle and high schools groups, our Canyon's Edge Field Camp Program immerses students in the physical and cultural geography of the Colorado Plateau with an emphasis on soils, geology, water, plants, animals and human relationships to this arid land.

Students receive instruction accompanied by a specially designed, printed workbook journal and enjoy physical challenge and exciting, fun-filled exploration and adventure.

Activities include:

  • Personal and group field science investigations
  • Naturalist observations
  • Role playing
  • Sketching
  • Desert literature readings
  • Writing activities
  • Physical challenge and adventure through 2-5 mile backcountry hikes

A special thank you goes to these major foundations for curriculum development, teaching materials and ongoing scholarship support for CFI's Outdoor Science School programs: Ruth H. Brown Foundation, The Chasman-Wiancko Family Fund, The William H. and Mattie Wattis Harris Foundation, the Rocky Mountain Power Foundation and The Palladium Foundation.

Professor Valley Field Camp

Our picturesque Professor Valley Field Camp is a permanent rustic camp that has it all! Surrounded with spectacular views of Professor Valley, the majestic Fisher Towers, deep red sandstone mesas, the Colorado River and the high peaks of the La Sal Mountains — it is the perfect place to relax, enjoy and learn about this amazingly diverse land.

Adding to this unique outdoor adventure, students reside in spacious Lakota-style Tipis furnished with cots while Yurts serve as their cookhouse and classroom — a truly memorable experience.
