AmeriCorps Field Camp Operations Assistant

This internship is a 900 Hour AmeriCorps position through the Utah Conservation Corps.

The position runs April 4th through October 30, with a summer break June 22-August 15.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The AmeriCorps Member Field Camp Operations Assistant (aka Camp Caretaker) will serve as the camp cook and caretaker, work closely with other field staff, oversee all general operations and maintenance on-site, and lead environmental service projects in a remarkable high desert setting. The Camp Caretaker will live and work (primarily) at Professor Valley Field Camp, located about 25 miles out of Moab in a beautiful, remote setting. Age groups served are elementary, middle and high school students with adult chaperones accompanying each group. Adult groups use the camp for retreats, workshops, and service projects. The camp is a rustic facility with yurts, tipis, latrines, and solar power, accommodating up to 40 visitors. When not at camp, the Camp Director will assist at our warehouse in Moab, or with resoration projects in the region.

This job includes a wide variety of skills and duties. To give you an idea of this variety, the duties and opportunities may include any of the following, depending on program needs and scheduling:

*Work directly with groups as a service learning project leader and camp cook (cooking for up to 45 people).

*Perform riparian and invasive species removal and trail/fence service projects at Field Camp as part of regular camp maintenance (tools and some training are provided.)

*Assist in creating a riparian area restoration plan for the future field camp site.

*Planning and implementing new service projects for students and adults (at Field Camp).

-Possibly staffing a Naturalist Table at Sorrel River Ranch.

-Possibly learning basic river raft guiding skills (please let us know if you are already licensed in Utah).

HOUSING / FOOD / TRANSPORT:

AmeriCorps Field Camp Operations Assistant will live at Professor Valley Field Camp in a private 8x10 canvas tent with a cot provided. The camp is located 25 miles from Moab, 1 mile off Highway 128 and does not have reliable cell phone coverage. Caretaker must be comfortable living alone for much of the time. No pets are allowed. Meals are provided during overnight training and programs; otherwise Caretaker provides own food and may use cooking facilities on site. There are rustic showers and latrines at the camp. Bunkhouse and office in town can be used for “real” showers and breaks, to store extra gear, and for computer/internet access. Caretaker needs to provide own transportation to Moab. A vehicle is not required to do the job, but will greatly aid getting to town on free time and in exploring nearby National Parks and outdoor recreation opportunities. Moab is famous for hiking, biking, river running, and climbing!

PAY AND BENEFITS:

The AmeriCorps Member is employed through Utah Conservation Corp/Utah State University. Time cards and payroll are processed by UCC/USU biweekly. 900 Hour members receive a total of $6250 living allowance and a $2675 education award upon successful completion.
