Recapture Lodge
From our cozy base at Recapture Lodge in Bluff, we explore the geology, plant life, and fascinating history of the Valley of the Gods and the Mexican Hat area on this two day, two night guided tour. Valley of the Gods lies between Bluff and Mexican Hat and is considered by many to be the less famous but equal “cousin” to the Navajo’s Monument Valley.
Your guides are retired geologist and long time Plateau resident Gene Foushee and CFI Founder and Director Karla VanderZanden. This is an “exploratory” trip in the grand tradition of CFI Special Trips for members that feature lesser known spots, guest experts and local flavor. A part of your fee helps to underwrite our educational school programs.

Our trip meets the first evening at Recapture Lodge in Bluff, Utah for trip orientation and lodging. Our tour is mostly by vehicle but stops for short hikes along the way. In addition to the colorful geological features of the Valley of the Gods, we will visit some unusual prehistoric rock art panels below Cedar Point and learn about early day oil and gold exploration that put “Goodridge” (later dubbed Mexican Hat) on the map.
Gene Foushee and his wife Mary, are long time residents of Bluff. In addition to running the lodge many years, he led regular tours in Monument Valley and Cedar Mesa. Gene is a geologist and an enthusiastic, gifted teacher and private pilot. Now retired, Gene and Mary remain active in community life and divide their time between homes in Bluff and Tucson.
Our group is kept small (minimum 4 and maximum 9 particpants.) Your trip fee includes two nights lodging (double occupancy) and meals beginning with breakfast Saturday morning through lunch Sunday afternoon, permit fees and transportation. If you wish to reserve a single room, please do so in advance with a $80 single supplement.
